Tom hanks had no acting experience durring his college time. He couldn't get cast in a college play. With actually starting his career, he went downtown, auditioned for a community theater play, was invited by the director of that play to go to Cleveland, and there his acting career started. He met his second wife, actress Rita Wilson on the set of the movie Volunteers (1985). In 1996 he made his first step behind the camera, directing as well as starring and writing the film That Thing You Do! (1996) which contains characters named James Mattingly and Leonard Haise. Tom Hanks has been cast to star in an upcoming movie adaption of Dan Brown's best selling mystery "The Vinci Code". Hanks will play the role of Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor who undertakes a modern day quest for the Holy Grail in a thriller steeped in purpoted secrets about the early christian Church. Tom Hanks is known as a star of Saving Private Ryan. In the scene in which his character tells the rest of the unit what he does for a living back at home, Hanks' speech was much longer in the original script. But Hanks felt that his character wouldn't have said so much about himself, and he told director Steven Spielberg so. Spielberg agreed, and the speech was shortened. He Played two successful romantic commedy movies with Meg Ryan, Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You've Got Mail (1998). Tom hanks was voted as 17th Best Actor of all time by the popular UK film magazine 'Empire'.
